Welcome to Fifth Grade!
Next week we will continue our last math unit--Algebra and Number Patterns. We will also continue our spiral review of material from the whole school year as we prepare for our final SOL test on May 18th.
We'll continue reading instruction by reviewing all of our skills from this year in a few fun book reports and projects. We'll also begin reading Holes as a class on Monday and begin practicing annotations in the book--we write in them, so if you haven't already please send in your child's personal copy of the book. I have most of them.
We've taken a break from NAG (North American Geography) for the past few weeks to review science material and now we're ready to jump back in. We are traveling to Canada next week and then on to Mexico and the Caribbean--the perfect locations to get us ready for summer break!
Science instruction is complete for the year, so we will incorporate what we've learned into cross-curricular projects like "The Whole New World" that we will begin next week. Students are working in small groups to create a new state to add to the US, writing about it's geography and climate, historical events, and charting maps of the new land. These projects are a fun way to blend what we learn in all subjects into one big connection project. They allow students to show what they've learned, act creatively and cooperatively, and apply their knowledge to real world (and fantasy!) scenarios.
