Welcome to Fifth Grade!
Next week we are starting a make a game project where students will be given a 5th grade topic and make a new game! We are also going to incorporate the infamous spinners into a math problem solving activity. :)
We'll continue reading instruction by reviewing all of our skills from this year in a few fun book reports and projects. We'll also continue reading Numbers the Stars as a class while practicing annotations in the book. The students are LOVING the book so far and can't wait to keep reading!! Students were also assigned their next quarterly book report project. This book report is different than before. It is creating a cereal box book report based on one of the books that they are reading for the 40 Book Challenge. It will be due no later than June 9th :)
We are continuing our travel to Canada next week and then on to Mexico and the Caribbean--the perfect locations to get us ready for summer break!
Science instruction is complete for the year, so we will incorporate what we've learned into cross-curricular projects like "The Whole New World" that we will begin next week. Students are working in small groups to create a new state to add to the US, writing about it's geography and climate, historical events, and charting maps of the new land. These projects are a fun way to blend what we learn in all subjects into one big connection project. They allow students to show what they've learned, act creatively and cooperatively, and apply their knowledge to real world (and fantasy!) scenarios.
