We read the story of the Little Red Hen. Students gave their opinions about her solution to her problem. Some students thought it was fair to not share the bread with the other characters because they did not help to make the bread. Others thought that maybe it she had shared the bread they would want to help her make more. We also read The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza. In this version the Little Red Hen shares the pizza and the other characters help her to do the dishes. As a class we compared and contrasted both stories using a Venn Diagram. In Writer’s workshop we filled out a story map for The Little Red Hen. Students wrote about the setting, the problem, and the solution.
This week we discussed the vocabulary terms heavy and light. The students used balance scales to compare the weight of two objects. They also used linking cubes to weigh objects in the balance scale. Students understand that heavier objects go down and lighter objects go up when you use a balance scale to measure weight.
Students created their own flags to represent themselves. They folded a paper into thirds and drew favorite foods, favorite hobbies, and favorite subjects on each third. Every student presented his/her flag to the class and wrote a description of the flag they made.
