Buckland Mills Learning Garden was established in 2013 as an outdoor learning space where students connect classroom learning to real-world experiences. The garden provides opportunities for hands-on exploration in science, math, literacy and environmental stewardship while fostering curiosity, collaboration and a love of nature. Through planting, observing and caring for the garden, students develop a deeper understanding of ecosystems, pollinators, food systems and their role in protecting the environment.
Over the past year, the garden has undergone significant growth and transformation. New pollinator habitats and native plantings have been added to support local wildlife, increase biodiversity and provide rich opportunities for student inquiry. Students have participated in ongoing investigations of plant life cycles, pollinators, ecosystems and weather patterns while collecting real-world data and documenting their learning through journals, photography and digital tools.
The garden has become a hub for community engagement, bringing together students, staff, families, Master Gardeners, community organizations and local partners. Throughout the year, volunteers have supported planting days, garden maintenance projects and special events that strengthened connections between the school and community. Family garden nights, BioBlitz activities, pollinator education opportunities and environmental stewardship projects have encouraged learners of all ages to explore and care for the natural world.
Technology integration has expanded learning beyond observation, empowering students to use iPads and digital tools to document discoveries, conduct research, create multimedia projects and share their thinking with authentic audiences. The garden also serves as a living laboratory for inquiry-based learning, where students ask questions, gather evidence and develop a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of living things.
