How are themes used in the Primary Years Programme?

The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IBPYP) is organized around six themes to help learners explore knowledge in the broadest sense. These themes include the following:
  • Who we are;
  • Where we are in place and time;
  • How we express ourselves;
  • How the world works;
  • How we organize ourselves;
  • Sharing the planet.
The themes are organized into a Program of Inquiry. The Primary Years Programme supports learners in constructing meaning through the inquiry process. The IBPYP strikes a balance between the specific subjects a student studies and the Program of Inquiry where themes are taught across more than one subject
What other IB Programmes are offered in PWCS?

The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP) serves students in grades 6 - 10. The programme is offered at Godwin and Beville Middle Schools leading into Gar-Field High School and at Stonewall Middle School leading into Stonewall Jackson High School. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is offered for students in grades 11 and 12 at Gar-Field and Stonewall Jackson High Schools.

How are all IB Programmes similar?
All three programs, IBPYP, IBMYP, and the IB Diploma Programme, develop student learning in specific subject areas. All three programmes also have themes or concepts that help students connect ideas across subjects. Finally, all three programmes involve students in terms of student responsibility to themselves and their communities as indicated in the IB Learner Profile.
